Sustainability Knowledge Network

Service and User Levels

Last Revised on August 26, 2008

The Sustainability Knowledge Network (SKN) operated by SKN Worldwide-USA, Inc. (“SKN Worldwide”) includes any services and features available on or through the SKN Portal.

Service

The Sustainability Knowledge Network Service builds upon and supports the SKN Worldwide core ideals, expert services and observed and emergent needs of sustainability-aware individuals, teams, communities and sustainable enterprises generally. The SKN core ideals and concepts include the concepts, tools and activities presented within the Sustainable Enterprise Fieldbook.

The SKN Portal Service includes public and private knowledge base libraries and folders; blogs, discussion forums and messaging; live, virtual and archived events and webcasts; and highly interactive, member-driven, collaborative Project and Community Workspaces and selected sustainability aligned Social Network Community interactions (referred to hereinafter as the “Service”).

User Levels

The SKN is designed to accommodate several different levels of users, user roles and services within a single integrated and interoperating technology platform. A user’s level, role and access to services are uniquely customized to the specific content and/or service areas to which they have registered within or joined and been granted such entitlements.  All users regardless of their level or role must use the services in accordance with the SKN Terms of Use. User levels and roles, and their associated entitlements and example services are:

  • Visitor: Person who randomly accesses the SKN Portal through third party search engines, partner website links and other sources. Visitor services are limited to browsing, searching, viewing and downloading publicly published content.
  • Registrant: Person who completes a registration form and becomes known or visible to the SKN administrators. Some registrant information may also be visible to users (i.e. user names associated with voluntary content submissions, forum comments and blog postings) depending upon the registrant preferences and the viewing user entitlements. Registrant services include those of a Visitor, plus entitlements to view and download additional “free”, but restricted public content; submit and publish comments, blog entries and submit new content and/or submit content suggestion requests to reviewers (see Reviewer role below).
  • Member: Person who elects to subscribe to a premium service and/or are invited to join and accept membership to a premium or private SKN Project or Community Workspace service. Member services include those of registrants, plus entitlements to view and download selected premium content within the private content areas to which they have subscribed or have been invited to, and accepted, to join. They may also elect to receive via email announcements and newsletters associated with their premium services where available.
  • Reviewer: The SKN content identification and publishing process uses reviewers to check Registrant and Member content postings and content requests prior to their being published to its appropriate area(s) of use. They may review and edit content titles, abstracts and key word tags. They will confirm the appropriate “State” of the content (Public or Private) as well as the users or user groups who are entitled to view it. Reviewers are also entitled to retract and delete published content.
  • Editor: The SKN uses editors to coordinate and supplement the Reviewer user role. In addition to all of the entitlements of a reviewer, Editors may add, delete, and organize content areas (usually viewed as folders) to those public and private Workspace areas where they have Editor level entitlements.
  • Manager: The SKN uses content managers to coordinate and supplement Registrant, Member, Reviewer and Editor activities. In addition to all Editor entitlements, a Manager is entitled to invite, activate and remove users form content areas and establish rules for content publishing in areas where they have Manager level entitlements.
  • Administrator: The SKN uses administrators to operate the services. In addition to all Manager entitlements, Administrators are entitled to create new user groups, new user services and subscription and/or invitation rules and edit any area specific services and subscription and/or invitation rules where they have Administrator level entitlements.
