Sick of Global Warming Debate

by Rupal Shroff — last modified Apr 05, 2007 09:47 PM

Debate around global warming and causes of the increase in earth's temperature.

As a student in the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise (dual-degree MBA/MS Natural Resources & Environment) at the University of Michigan, I find myself debating global warming from both perspectives: business and the environment. This is exhausing and demoralizing. As a result, I find myself avoiding such debates. When people argue that humans are not contributing to this global warming, I just sit there and listen. When it's my turn, I just tell them I'm not interested in arguing cause, but working on solutions. How can we get people to move past the debate and start making change?

You're not wrong to focus on solutions, but part of the solution is raising consciousness as broadly as possible. I agree that debating with people who are deeply entrenched in denial is frustrating, exhausting and at least sometimes, fruitless. You have to wonder what motivates people who are still so unwilling to grasp this, despite the fact that scientists worldwide are now in agreement. Fear is certainly a factor. Then there is the question of what they read and who they listen to on the radio, etc. There is certainly a lot of misinformation out there.
